Environmental Business Pledge

August 3rd, 2008 by Rachel

The Environmental Business Pledge is a unique initiative aimed at Manchester businesses who wish to improve their environmental performance. The scheme both rewards and recognises those businesses that have made a solid commitment and tangible improvement to their environmental attitude and impact.

Assessed on three levels; acknowledgement (bronze), action (silver) & achievement (gold) the pledge is an easy way for businesses to become involved in the local environment whilst rewarding those that have been successful.

We are proud to have achieved the Bronze level award since being made aware of the scheme in April and are well on our way to earning silver by the end of the year.

Carbon Footprint Ltd – Offsetting

July 28th, 2008 by Rachel

Using the Carbon Trust’s website we have calculated our carbon footprint including business and personal miles to and from work, our energy use and the waste that we generate inhouse.  This does not by any means make us carbon neutral but it’s a good place to start and as you may have gathered by now, we’re all about good starting points!

Carbon Footprint Ltd is an independent company which offsets carbon emissions by investing in various clean & renewable energy projects globally.  Through the Carbon Trust we established that we needed to offset over 26 tonnes of carbon to significantly reduce our footprint for May 2007 – May 2008 and did so via Carbon Footprint’s website.

The project we chose is investing in wind turbines and is based in Harshnath, India.  Using the Voluntary Carbon Standard (VCS) the project is governed by credible but easy to understand criteria which convinced us that we were investing wisely.  For more on Carbon Footprint Ltd please click the logo below, or for our specific project click on the wind turbines.

Stormin’ Norman

July 14th, 2008 by Rachel

On the 11 May our very own Miss Sarah Norman (otherwise known as the Norms, Normster or Normski) flung herself out of a plane in order to raise close to £600 for charity. Stormin’ Norman took the death defying leap in order to raise funds for the Cotswold Care Hospice which cares for people suffering from life threatening illnesses as well as providing support to their families. With such a fantastic cause it’s no wonder that Norms took to the skies but hat’s off to her, Sarah, we salute you!

Tree for all

July 9th, 2008 by Rachel

One of our green goals for 2008 is to make our clients aware of the possibility and encourage as many as possible to transfer to recycled or sustainable stock for their printed work.  Many are already there, proactively asking for sustainable stock but others are unable to do so for a variety of reasons including brand consistency and cost.

To combat this, and to further our long term aim of sustained and recycled stock being the staple at Studio North; an opt out rather than opt in policy, we are going to plant a tree through the Woodland Trust for every client who orders a print job not of environmentally friendly stock.

Admittedly this is not a science and although contributing to our carbon neutrality it will not be included in our carbon offsetting programme but we feel that it once again reconfirms our dedication to our environmental improvement whilst simultaneously ensuring the longevity and endurance of the UK’s countryside.

Sustainable success!

July 1st, 2008 by Rachel

Over the last few months here at SN we have done a number of things to improve our environmental performance and already we are getting positive results.

Having joined the Carbon Trust, calculated our carbon footprint and offset our emissions wherever possible we decided that the next step would be to switch to a totally sustainable energy provider.

Despite being more expensive (most sustainable providers have a price tag of 10 – 15% more than traditional energy sources) we have already begun to reap the rewards.  Incredible we know but increased awareness coupled with simple initiatives such as switching off lights, monitors and turning down the thermostat by a couple of degrees has already resulted in a drop in our monthly direct debit….

Our small changes make a big difference policy is certainly paying off and yes, we may be a little smug about it but hey, we’re being green AND benefitting from it, best of both worlds I’d say :-)

The Binsey Collection

April 25th, 2008 by Michael

As part of our commitment to helping local artistic talent, we recently helped Stockport born and bred artist Francis O’Neill with the launch of his Binsey Collection Exhibition at The Jam Factory in Oxford. Our creative team donated valuable design input for his invitations and exhibit catalogue for his first fully independent one man show. The critically acclaimed exhibition was an outstanding commercial success with paintings fetching up to £4900.

Support for local NACC group

March 10th, 2008 by Michael

We are proud to report that we are continuing to support the North West group of the NACC by producing their quarterly newsletter throughout 2008. The National Association for Colitis and Crohn’sDisease (NACC) brings together people of all ages who have Ulcerative Colitis or Crohn’s Disease, their families and the health professionals involved in their care. These two illnesses are both forms of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and they affect about 1 in 400 people in the United Kingdom.

Organiser Tony Mills commented “Studio North have provided the group with invaluable help in communicating our latest news and fundraising activities to our membership base in an extremely cost-effective manner.
